Top three finishersThe Belize Cycling Association sponsored its 85th Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic on Saturday March 30th, 2013. The historic and traditional ride started from in front of Leslies’ Imports on the George Price Highway at 6:00 am and then travelled the entire length of the highway to Columbus Park in San Ignacio Town where the cyclists turned and then headed back to Belize City for the conclusion on the Newtown Barracks in front of Hour Bar.

The 139.6-mile event attracted  87 riders which included 6 from the USA, 10 Mexicans and 2 Guatemalans. At the end of the race, some 44 riders did not finish the course, while 41 riders cross the finish line.
The record of 5:40:12 which was set by Ryan Baumann in 2009 was not broken, but this year’s race was the fastest ever rode by any cyclists that have participated in the Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic.

In the last leg of the 139.6-mile race, some 15 riders which included Darnell Barrow of Team Santino’s Belize were heading for the finish line on the Princess Margaret Drive.  In a dramatic to sprint to the finish line, Belizean Darnell Barrow was able to outsprint two foreigners to capture the 85th Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic in a time of 5:46:49.

The second rider to cross the finish line was Mexican rider Juan Pablo Magallanes of Team of Benny’s Megabytes and he was followed by American John Delong of Veloshine Cycling Team, and he was followed by Justin Williams of BZN Linkup Cycling Team and he was followed by Belizean Gregory Lovell of Telemedia Cycling Team for the top five finishers in the event.

The other top finishers of the 85th Annual Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic included Scottie Weiss of Veloshine Cycling Team, Roger Troyer of Belikin Western Spirit Cycling Team, Leroy Cassasola of Team Santino’s Belize, Brandon Morgan of C-Ray Elite Cycling Club, Shane Vasquez of Belikin Western Cycling to round off the top 10 finishers in this historic ride.

The second batch of finishers included Brnadon Cattouse of C-Ray Cycling Team,  Ron Vasquez of Belikin Western Spirit Cycling Club, Kenroy “Smoke” Gladden who is unattached, followed by Henry Moreira also unattached, Luis Santinzo, who was then followed by Florienco Ranos-Torres of C-Ray Cycling, Luis Pulido, followed by Giovanni Choto of of Belikin Western Spirit Cycling, followed by Alejandro Padilla of Team Santino’s and then followed by Jose Choto to round off the top 20 finishers.

This year’s 85th running of the Holy Saturday Cross Country cycling Classic was the fastest of record.
