Several teams of basketball players had the opportunity to use for the first time the newly renovated basketball court of Santa Elena Town in the Cayo District this past Friday. Eight teams will now participate in the Santa Elena Basketball Tournament, with players becoming actively involved each Friday and Saturday starting at 6:00 pm, for the next two months, in what promises to be an annual event.

At the games last Friday night, the ‘Dream Marching Band, a local band group from Santa Elena took to the center of the basketball court under the illumination of four powerful light sources. Present for the games were president of the basketball tournament David Garcia as well as Valan Hyde, Chairman of the Cayo Central Division.

In his address to the spectators on Friday, Hon. Rene Montero, Minister of Works and Transport, said that the Santa Elena Basketball Tournament was in fulfillment of a manifesto promise to bring back sports to a new level in Santa Elena. Minister Montero stated that Santa Elena had a great potential in commerce, agriculture and tourism. He urged the youths to take good care of the basketball court for it belonged to them. Minister Montero also reminded everyone that by working ‘shoulder to shoulder’ Santa Elena could become a dream home. All Players, he said, were role models and as a result were encouraged to practice good sportsmanship while on the court.

The basketball court in Santa Elena was renovated at a cost of twenty thousand dollars and was the result of a joint partnership of both the public and private sector.

“We have in mind to upgrade all the sporting facilities here in Santa Elena and Cayo Central to ensure that the youths have a place to go and use their energies so that they can socialize, so that they can have fun and enjoy themselves,” says the Representative for the Cayo Central Division.

Each basketball team received a set of  jerseys and a basketball from Minister Montero last Friday. Aside from the basketball tournament, the Cayo Central Division is also holding the ‘Cayo Central Cup’ where some seven football teams will be participating.
