Ryan Lozano and Lenny BengucheThe family of 23-year-old Ryan Lozano has requested that an investigation be launched into the shooting that led to his death on Thursday, April 18th. According to police, at approximately 12:20 on Thursday afternoon, police responded to a burglary in progress in the Los Lagos area of the Belize District. Upon arrival, they came across 33-year-old Lenny Benguche who was hiding behind the house. Police approached and apprehended Benguche. Police say that Lozano then came from out of the house armed with a knife and crowbar. He was warned by officers but according to the report he “continued to approach the police in a threatening manner”. As a result, police opened fire hitting him once in the abdomen. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment but died on Friday morning, April 19th.

The Professional Standards Branch of the Belize Police Department is investigating the incident to determine if the officers were justified in the use of deadly force.

On Monday, April 22nd, Lenny Benguche was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for the crime of burglary. Benguche appeared in court before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith and pleaded not guilty to the offense. The court prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that Benguche is a seasoned criminal with a long rap sheet of criminal offenses, including robbery. He also owes the court for a previous offense.  With that, bail was denied and Benguche was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance on June 7th. Lenny Benguche was tried some years ago on a charge of attempted murder upon Christina Zetina, a female who he allegedly shot in a jealous rage. He was found not guilty of the charge.
