Minister Faber to honour Outstanding Teachers in Education ShowcaseThe Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is holding Education Showcase 2013 under the theme “Working Together: Stakeholders Partnering to Enhance Education”. Education Showcase 2013 is taking place from Sunday, May 5th, to Friday, May 17th, and a series of events will take place in the two week period which Minister Patrick Faber hopes will reinvigorate education stakeholders.

Education Showcase began with the Minister’s address on May 5. He gave an update on the effects of new policies that are being implemented into the education system such as the secondary school finance reform and amalgamation program. The secondary school finance reform continues to take effect as most schools are seeing increases in enrollment and Government funding. The amalgamations that have been executed thus far have proven to be extremely successful as those who were previously opponents of the process are now sharing praises. Minister Faber says that his administration will continue to focus on increasing high school enrollment by means of scholarships and second chance programs. Teacher training continues to be of special importance to the Ministry and more opportunities will be provided for teachers to improve their skills. Minister Faber continues to call on one major stakeholder group to step up to the plate in order for the education system to truly develop. That group is the parents. The vast majority of parents continue to show little to no interest in their children’s education and it slows the developmental agenda of the ministry. Education Showcase ends on Friday, May 17th, with Teachers’ Day, which will be celebrated at the Belize National Teachers Union branch level.

The highlight of the Education Showcase is the Outstanding Teachers Awards. The Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award Program seeks to recognize outstanding teachers at each level of the school system in order to honour them and show appreciation for their excellent service. The program was established shortly after Hon. Patrick Faber became Minister of Education and is held in collaboration with the Association of General Managers of Primary Schools, the Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize and the Belize National Teachers Union. Outstanding teachers in six categories will be honoured on Thursday, May 16th. Those categories are Pre-Primary Education, Primary Education, Secondary Education, Tertiary Education, Special Education and Technical/Vocational Education. Educators will also be honoured with lifetime service awards.

Education Showcase 2013 also includes the launching of school meals programs in Belize City and Dangriga on Tuesday, May 7th, and Wednesday, May 8th. On Thursday, May 9th, the Minister of Education will be touring the Belize Rural Primary School which was formed from the recent amalgamation of 8 primary schools in the Belize River Valley. On Saturday, May 11th, Minister Faber will be hosting a reading corner at the NICH Parking Lot in Belize City. He will be joined by the Mayor of Belize City, Darrell Bradley, and they will be reading to children. Officials of the ministry will make appearance on various talk shows during the two week period and they will be giving account on the operations of the ministry. There will also be business fairs and open days at different institutions across the country.
