Ample information was provided by the San Ignacio Cancer Society on prostate, breast and skin cancer. Information was also made available on the Human Papilloma virus, a sexually transmitted disease.
Despite all the forms of cancers, there remain some useful strategies in the all out war on Cancer.

“…You need to listen to your medical providers, you need to read…what we want to do the most right now is public awareness and education,” says Flora Usher, President of the new Cancer Society in San Ignacio and whose son is a cancer survivor.

“A lot of women are not aware that just by doing an annual pap smear, you can pick up cervical cancer; some women feel that you do not need to do a pap smear, which is a myth”, she also said.
The Belize Family Life Association was also present on Saturday at the Cayo Welcome Center to announce that they continue to have a full set of Reproductive Health Services at their long standing address on Church Street in San Ignacio Town.

Since being formed, the San Ignacio Cancer Society has had its own Facebook page. Those wishing to get help, assist in any way possible or gather more information on cancer can now call 651-3597.

Assistance for Saturday’s educational event was given by Flames Auto World, who printed the San Ignacio Cancer Society banner. Help also came to the San Ignacio Cancer Society from BECOL, the Belize Family Live Association and many other individuals interested in the fight against cancer.

The Belize Cancer Society was formed in 1996 and has worked nationwide on public awareness regarding the prevention and control of cancer; for good reasons since the battle with cancer is ongoing. For the period 2007 to 2011, there were a total of eight hundred and fifty seven cases of cancer deaths. From these deaths, some 48.8 % occur in persons less than 65 years of age.

Meanwhile; the Belmopan Branch of the Belize Cancer Society will be holding a Cancer Walk this Saturday, May 18th, 2013 from the Community of Camalote to Belmopan. Those who wish to participate in this event will meeting at the Post Office parking lot in Belmopan at 5:15 am and will then be bused to Camalote where the walk begins at 6:00 am. Funds raised from this event will be going towards a Resource Center for the Belmopan Branch of the Belize Cancer Society. This is perfect timing, since the Month of May is now being observed as Cancer Awareness Month.
