On Monday, May 20th police escorted a 16-year-old boy to the Belize City Family Court where he was charged with a count of keeping a firearm without a gun license.

The teenager, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge and due to the nature of the offense, was remanded into custody at the the Wagner’s Facility in Hattieville until his next court date set for June 28th, 2013.

The minor was escorted to court by CIB personnel after he was released from the KHMH where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the left wrist area.

Reports are that he was shot by an off duty police officer who had responded to the scene of a shooting between the 16-year-old minor and another man not yet identified by police.

That other man was also shot and was also hospitalized at the KHMH we understand. No charges have been levied on him yet.

According to police, on Thursday, May 16th, 2013, at about 5:00 p.m., a shootout occurred in the Lake Independence area between two members of rival gangs. At the end, two men were shot and as many as 20 shots were fired at the corner of Flamboyant and Vernon Streets. When one of the men tried to flee from the area after the exchange of gunshots, he was shot by an off duty police officer.
