John Lorencio MartinezOn Friday, May 24th, police arrested and charged, 24-year-old John Lorencio Martinez, with the crime of murder.

Martinez, who was unrepresented, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith where he was read a single charge of murder in the February 22nd, 2013 killing of Ernest Daniel Savery. No plea was taken and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 24th.

On February 22nd, 2013, Ernest Savery was gunned down at around 10:00 in the night just a stone's throw away from his home. He was shot once to the stomach and was rushed to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Reports are that Savery, who was residing in the New Site area of Ladyville, had just left his home and was walking out of his gate to go to the home of his girlfriend who was across the street, when he heard his girlfriend yell out. Two young men then walked up to Savery and one pulled out a firearm. He rushed towards the man who had the gun and a struggle ensued for the gun; during the struggle he was shot once in the stomach.

Savery was buried the following week in Belize City. He was the brother of Eric Savery, known as Ghetto Fab, who was also murdered in the city some years ago.
