Louisiana Government School Girls and Faith Nazarene Boys are National Primary Schools Basketball Champions Print E-mail

Faith Nazarene going up for a loose ball against St. Martin’s De Porres.The 2012-2013 National Primary Schools Basketball championships came to an end on Friday, May 24th, 2013, at the Bird’s Isle in Belize City.

In the girls’ championship game, Louisiana Government School from Orange Walk Town representing the Orange Walk District defeated Holy Redeemer School representing the Belize District by the score of 22-13. The top scorer for Louisiana Government School was Yasel Sutherland with 8 points while the top scorer for Holy Redeemer School was Zaria Jenkins with 7 points.

At the end of the championship, Yasel Sutherland of Louisiana Government School was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player.

In the consolation game, Holy Family Roman Catholic School from Hopkins Village representing the Stann Creek District defeated Libertad Methodist School from Libertad Village representing the Corozal District by the score of 25-3. The top scorer for the Holy Family Roman Catholic School was Rushell Ramos with 11 points and the top scorer for Libertad Methodist School was Tamira Nuñez with 3 points.
In the first semi-final game, Holy Redeemer School defeated Holy Family Roman Catholic School by the score of 19-14. The top scorer for Holy Redeemer School was Zaria Jenkins with 15 points while the top scorer for Holy Family Roman Catholic School was Stariette Requeña with 10 points.

In the second semi-final game, Louisiana Government School defeated Libertad Methodist School by the score of 22-13. The top scorers for Louisiana Government School were Yasel Sutherland and Zelita Catzim with 8 points each while the top scorer for Libertad Methodist was Tamira Nuñez with 6 points.

In the first game of the day, Libertad Methodist School defeated Bishop O.P. Martin from San Ignacio Town representing the Cayo District by the score of 7-2. The top scorer for Libertad Methodist School was Tamira Nuñez with 3 points while the top scorer for Bishop O.P. Martin School was Bianca Najarro with 2 points. In game two, Holy Family Roman Catholic School defeated St. Peter Claver School from Punta Gorda Town representing the Toledo District by the score of 18-11. The top scorer for Holy Family Roman Catholic School was Stariette Requeña with 6 points and the top scorer for St. Peter Claver School was Normalee Gomez with 6 points.

In the third game of the day, Holy Redeemer School defeated Libertad Methodist School by the score of 23-3. The top scorer for Holy Redeemer was Zaria Jenkins with 9 points while the top scorer for Libertad Methodist was Briana Johnson with 2 points. In game four, Louisiana Government School defeated Holy Family Roman Catholic School by the score of 18-9. The top scorer for Louisiana Government School was Yasel Sutherland with 11 points and the top scorer for Holy Family Roman Catholic School was Stariette Requena with 9 points.

 In game five, Holy Redeemer School defeated Bishop O.P. Martin Roman Catholic School by the score of 20-6. The top scorer for Holy Redeemer School was Zaria Jenkins with 18 points and the top scorer for Bishop O.P. Martin was Jenelee Vanegas with 4 points. In game six, Louisiana Government School defeated St. Peter Claver School by the score of 15-4. The top scorer for Louisiana Government School was Yasel Sutherland with 8 points and the top scorer for St. Peter Claver School was Normalee Gomez with 4 points.

In the boys’ championship game, Faith Nazarene School from San Ignacio Town representing the Cayo District edged St. Martin’s De Porres School representing the Belize District by the score of 26-22 to capture its first school title. The top scorer for Faith Nazarene was Stejan Hewlette with 10 points and the top scorer for St. Martin’s De Porres was Glen Arzu with 11 points.

At the end of the championship, Ryler Rhaburn from Faith Nazarene School was named the Most Valuable Player.

In the boys’ consolation game, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School from Dangriga Town representing the Stann Creek District defeated St. Peter Claver School from Punta Gorda Town representing the Toledo District by the score of 23-7. The top scorer for Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School was Latrelle Middleton with 14 points and the top scorers for St. Peter Claver School were Jervis Mendes, Anthuan Cus and Ivan Gillett with 2 points each.

In the first semi-final game, St. Martin’s De Porres School won over Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School by the score of 30-20. The top scorer for St. Martin’s De Porres was Glen Arzu with 12 points and the top scorer for Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School was Donell Arzu with 12 points.

In game two, Faith Nazarene defeated St. Peter Claver School by the score of 38-8. The top scorer for Faith Nazarene was Ryler Rhaburn with 13 points and the top scorer for St. Peter Claver was Delbert Diego with 8 points.

In the first game of the boys’ championship, Faith Nazarene defeated Corozal Methodist School by the score of 32-2. The top scorer for Faith Nazarene was Osvin Parham with 10 points and Dejon Sankey scored the 2 points for Corozal Methodist.

In the second game, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic defeated St. Peter Claver School by the score of 18-4. The top scorer for Sacred Heart School was Donell Arzu with 14 points and the top scorers for St. Peter Claver School were Ivan Gillett and Anthuan Cus with 2 points each. In game three, St. Martin’s De Porres defeated Corozal Methodist School by the score of 22-6. The top scorer for St. Martin’s De Porres was Glen Arzu with 10 points and the top scorer for Corozal Methodist was Dejon Sankey with 5 points.

In game four, Sacred Heart School defeated La Immaculada Roman Catholic School by the score of 24-4. The top scorer for Sacred Heart School was Donell Arzu with 12 points and the top scorer for La Immaculada was Eric Luna with 3 points. In game five, Faith Nazarene defeated St. Martin’s De Porres by the score of 23-10. The top scorer for Faith Nazarene was Kyron Molina with 9 points and the top scorers for St. Martin’s De Porres School were Glen Arzu and Marquis Conorquie with 4 points each.

In game six, St. Peter Claver School defeated La Immaculada Roman Catholic School by the score of14-13. The top scorer for St. Peter Claver School was Jervis Mendez with 5 points and the top scorer for La Immaculada was Clinton Shaw with 5 points.

The championship awards were presented by Dwight Tillett, Executive Laision Officer in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to the winners of the championship. We say congratulations to all the student-athletes that participated in the championship.
