Helal MiahOn Tuesday, July 16th Bangladesh businessman, Helal Miah, appeared in Magistate’s Court before Clive Lino where he was formally charged for common assault and use of threatening words upon a Bowen & Bowen employee.

Miah, the owner of a dollar store in Belize City, does not speak English very well and was provided with a translator. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was offered bail in the sum of $1,500.00 plus one surety of the same amount but his surety needed to be a Belizean. He met bail and was ordered to reappear in court at a later date.

Allegations are that on July 4, 2013, he committed a common assault upon Kevin Garbutt. He was additionally charge with one count of using threatening words when he allegedly uttered obscenties to Garbutt. According to Miah, the salesman was over charging him and that led to an altercation when he spoke up for his rights.
