L-R shows Vice Principal of the Santa Elena Roman Catholic Primary School, Deborah Reneau and facilitator Dr. Jennifier Morrow giving a presentation Monday at the George Price Center in Belmopan. The Santa Elena Primary School is the Pilot School for M.O.R.EA two day workshop under the Belize Teacher Leadership Project BTLP ended on Tuesday of this week at the George Price Center for Peace and Development in Belmopan. The workshop was facilitated by curriculum designer Doctor Jennifer Morrrow. In attendance for both Monday and Tuesday were Principals of Schools and other leaders from the Educational Sector.

Organizers of the BTLP are hoping to promote the Multiple Options for Results in Education M.O.R.E Model where teachers and leaders are encouraged to utilize new strategies and in so doing develop efficacy in their profession.

“What we do is work with the schools to identify the needs, where their staff strengths are but also where their staff needs refinement, so we work with the leaders of the school to come up with the professional development plan that is customized to the school…”, says Doctor Jennifer Morrow, who is U.S based but has spent four years of her life living in Belize.

Thus far, the M.O.R.E Model has been embraced by the Santa Elena Roman Catholic Primary School since 2010 and Sacred Heart College since last year. Deborah Reneau, Vice Principal of the Santa Elena Primary School reports that her school, which currently has a population of 1013 students, has seen tremendous changes in terms of truancy.

"Before, where it was seen that we were teaching for test, we are now teaching for life-long learners...it is more like a learning community whereby students learn from each other, instead of working against each other, they work together...", she says.

The Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust continues to support the Belize Teacher Leadership Project. On October 19th 2012 the Board of Trustees approved grants towards the leadership training for 40 teachers at the Santa Elena Roman Catholic Primary School. The Santa Elena Primary School has since become a Pilot School using the M.O.R.E Model promoted by Doctor Jennifer Morrow, Abigail Wade and others.

While the participants of this week's brain based strategies workshop have already left to their different destinations, these school leaders and teachers are being encouraged to be continuously engaged via extra reading, blogs, chatting and online assignments. This extra effort by teachers will eventually prove useful since the evidence based educational research now suggests that the more their students are engaged, the faster will be their pace of learning.
