Minister of Education, Hon. Patrick Faber, scholarship recipients, Chairman and other members of BTL’s BoardFourteen distinguished young people joined the Belize Telemedia Limited family on Thursday, August 22nd, as they each received what is considered to be the best scholarship in the country. The Belize Telemedia Limited has been providing opportunities for young Belizeans to further their education since its scholarship program started in 1991. Since then, almost 600 students have received scholarships and over $1 million has been spent on the educational expenses of promising Belizean youths.

458 students applied for a scholarship this year. The BTL Scholarship Committee reviewed all applications and selected sixty candidates based on financial need, academic performance over the past three years and performance in the Primary School Examinations. Those candidates were called in for an interview with the committee during which they were asked questions that did not appear on the application form. Based on those interviews, the committee awarded scholarships to thirteen students that will be entering high school this year and one student that will be attending junior college.

The secondary school scholarship covers tuition, books and other school fees for the students’ four years at high school and the tertiary level scholarship covers the same for the student’s two years at junior college. A member of the scholarship committee is assigned to each scholarship recipient to play the role of mentor. They are to keep track of the student’s performance throughout the school year. Students also have the opportunity to request the services of a tutor that will be paid for by BTL. BTL boasts a graduation success rate of “more than 99 percent”, according to Michael Augustus, Head of the Scholarship Committee. Dr. Dionne Miranda, Public Relations Manager, said there were only fourteen scholarships awarded this year because new scholarships are proportionate to recent graduates. The institution maintains a scholarship class of close to 75 students each year.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, was the Special Guest Speaker at the event. He reemphasized the ministry’s motto that education is everybody’s business. Minister Faber praised BTL for being a responsible corporate citizen. He also took the opportunity to say a general thank you to all organizations that contribute to the educational development of the country in various ways.
