Football and Volleyball Games to start in CayoA first of its kind Five-a-side football marathon is being planned to start at 10:00a.m. on September 1, in Santa Elena Town. So far fourteen teams are preparing to compete for the Cayo Central Five-a-side tournament. The launch to a series of games was to have been made this past Sunday, but due to the rains it had to be postponed. Nevertheless, a large crowd gathered this past Sunday to enjoy a few matches on the much improved grounds by the Santa Elena Public Library; just on the outside of the Santa Elena Basketball Court. Newly installed poles have been placed on the football field and holes on the grounds have been refilled to avoid injury to the players. The marathon is being sponsored by the Hon. Rene Montero and will last to November of this year.

Once started, the Five-a-side will continue every Wednesdays and Sundays for which organizers hope will bring many young people together. One of those organizers is Mike Salazar, who is also a Councilor at the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Board. Salazar told us that the tournaments are designed to engage young people in a positive way and efforts will continue to be made to uplift the community.

One good way of having young people engaged is through sports.

“It is very important to bring the youths together so that they can socialize, so that they can learn to respect one another, to form bonds and make friends”, says the Hon. Rene Montero, Representative for the Cayo Central Division and who is also the Minister of Works and Transport.

He also said, “Santa Elena is a very progressive Town and it is growing, we intend to emphasize and focus on the youths, because they are going to be the future of tomorrow and we need to start to mold them and prepare them for that role.”

Along with the Five-a-side Football, a Volley ball tournament will also start on September 1st at the Santa Elena Basketball Court and is also being brought through the efforts of the Hon. Rene Montero. Some five teams have so far indicated an interest to participate in the Volleyball on subsequent Fridays and Saturdays.
