Indian businessman fined for hugging a Customer Print E-mail

Bhishan Kumar IssraniOn Tuesday, October 22nd, a charge of common assault was placed against businessman, 49-year-old Bhishan Kumar Issrani who was accused of hugging one of his would-be customers, a female age 18. The young woman told police that Issrani pressed himself against her body for 20 seconds making her feel uncomfortable.

In court, Issrani was charged with only one count of common assault upon the 18-year-old student. The facts of the case was read out to him and after hearing the student’s allegations, Issrani agreed with the facts and pleaded guilty to the offense.

The Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith who dealt with the matter, imposed a non-custodial sentence upon Issrani where she ordered  him to pay a fine to the court and compensation to his young victim.

He was ordered to pay the court a $200 fine plus a $5.00 cost of court forthwith in default of payment he is to spend 2 months imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay the victim $150.00 in compensation for his action towards her. That compensation was also ordered to be paid forthwith in default another 2 months imprisonment. Within minutes Issrani paid up all fines and was able to go free.

According to the facts read out in court, the 18-year-old students reported to police that at about 4:30 p.m., on Monday, October 21, she went into Miami Fashion Store which is located at #3 Albert Street in Belize City where she spoke with a male person about the price of a shoe.

According to the student, that’s when the man inside the store approached her and hugged her pressing his body against her for 20 seconds causing her to feel uncomfortable.

As a result, the student visited the police station and made a report into the incident and Issrani was visited at his store and informed of the offense he had committed and was charged.
