A renovated library and new resource center, The Santa Elena Resource Center,  was inaugurated on Monday morning of this week in Santa Elena Town, Cayo District. It fulfills a long formed dream from the residents of Santa Elena Town, when 17 years ago a library was built at the same location, with funds from the Baron Bliss Trust Fund. But this time the complete finishing of the Santa Elena Public Library and new computer room was built with funds from an Inter American Development Bank Loan Two Program, which had been obtained by the Government of Belize.

Present for Monday’s opening were students from the Saint Ignatius Roman Catholic and Eden Seventh Day Adventist High Schools as well as representatives of the Eden Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, who are now the main beneficiaries of a freshly painted library and fully equipped and air conditioned computer room.

Also present were the Hon. Rene Montero, Minister of Works and Transport as well as the Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports.

“This inauguration is indeed a momentous occasion…and it is a fulfillment of yet another promise to the people of Santa Elena,” said the Hon. Rene Montero.

“This newly renovated building was conceived to create a profound safe and welcoming space for the youths of Santa Elena, it was built to serve and reconnect with society…this Library is fully equipped with the necessary tools to allow you the youths and members of the community to use this facility as a stepping stone to fulfill your educational dreams,” said the Representative of the Cayo Central Division.

As well as agreeing with the Hon. Rene Montero that a Library is a cornerstone of any modern Society, the Hon. Patrick Faber applauded his colleague “…who of course had the impetus behind all of this.”

“I want to encourage you especially the young people this morning that as we move into this facility, this new renovated facility that we use it to enhance ourselves to learn and to be part of this new excitement that is taking place in our Country and to refrain [from] being part of the negative,” stated the Hon. Patrick Faber, to the assembled students and members of the community.

Mrs. Brenda Armstrong, who was part of the high powered team from the Belize National Library Service and Information System present for the inauguration Monday also reminded that the Santa Elena Public Library, part of a National network of 16 other branches, was part of a deliberate effort to support the learning process, to encourage reading as “…we continually strive to place an emphasis on upgrading what we have...”

The construction of the Santa Elena Resource Center was undertaken by the Social Investment Fund SIF, with the Saint Ignatius High School, the Esperanza ICT, Bradley’s Bank Electrification, the Santiago Juan Pre-School, the San Ignacio Library and the Sacred Heart Computer Laboratory being just some of its products. The cost of the retrofitting of the institution was $404,924,00.

SIF is also about to begin the construction of a San Antonio Health Center and Arms of Love Pre School in the Cayo District. All of these projects are being funded in line with Government’s policies geared towards reducing poverty in Belize says Nellie Trench, SIF’s Acting Executive Director.
