On Sunday February 23rd 2,051 voters came out to the CET in San Ignacio and from 10 in the morning to 5 in the evening they voted to have a new Standard Bearer. At the end of the convention Omar Figueroa had received 1,383 votes besting his competitor Jorge David Tesecum who received 648 votes. There were 20 spoilt ballots.

Immediately after counting and tallying the announcement was made public to a group of anxious party supporters who had gathered at the gate of the CET. Addressing the crowd was Alberto August, Party Chairman, who indicated that this had been one of the largest conventions the division had ever seen. He then went on to administer the oath of allegiance to Figueroa after which Tesecum spoke to the UDP faithful in the constituency.

Speaking to the gathering, Tesecum noted that "we all belong to the same party and the people have spoken. I still belong to the party and will continue helping the party in whatever is needed," he stated. He continued by congratulating Figueroa for his victory and explained that they were brothers in the UDP and thanked everyone who came out to support him. He concluded that he will continue to work with Figueroa to better the party.

For his part Figueroa also thanked Tesecum for his valiant effort and explained that because of his contest the efforts were taken to another level where he walked house to house campaigning. He added that the fight has just began and he thanked voters. "Today we chart a new course and a new chapter in the political history of Cayo North. Under this new leadership our tomorrow will always be brighter than our yesterdays." Stated Figueroa. He added that along with the central government he will work to make things better for the constituency and that his eyes are now set on a new target "tighten up" he told the current area rep.

The Cayo North convention was the 6th that the UDP has conducted where elections were held. Two others were also held which were endorsements. There are now 5 more to go with Fort George taking place on Saturday March 1st where William Schnarr will go up against Roger Espejo. On Sunday March 2nd it will be Beverly Castillo, Emroy Castillo, Michael Hutchinson, Francis Lizama and Dean Samuels going up against one another for the Belize Rural Central Constituency.
