burgess and garbutt.jpg - 580.03 KbResidents from the Cayo District are still reeling from the horrible murder of a recent graduate from the University of Belize. Twenty four year old Kayla Burgess was found dead shortly after 6:30 p.m. last Thursday in the rear of her Kia Sorento SUV; some 100 yards from the Pride of Mopan Bar on the Santa Familia Road. She had a plastic bag covering her head and a white plastic strap tightened around her neck.

Kayla Burgess’s vehicle was processed by investigators but the key was not found.  The body was transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where death was confirmed at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, the body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue for a Post Mortem Examination. Her cause of death has been certified as due to broncho-aspiration, from asphyxia, which resulted from strangulation.

Subsequent to this incident, 21 year old Vince “Vinnie” Garbutt, a Galen University student from the Kontiki Area in San Ignacio was detained and was observed to have scratches on several parts of his body.

Vinnie Garbutt has admitted that he strangled Kayla Burgess at his residence after which he disposed of her body in Bullet Tree Falls Village. Vinnie Garbutt was then picked up in Bullet Tree by his 18 year old girlfriend Faith Dueck in his personal vehicle. Faith Dueck, who was a waitress of the Kontiki area, has admitted in just picking up Vinnie Garbutt at Bullet Tree in his Mitsubishi Galant Sedan.

A search on the houses of both Vinnie Garbutt and Faith Dueck has been conducted. Found at the residence of Vinnie Garbutt were some possessions of Kayla Burgess. During the search police also found a bloody pair of slippers as well as a bloody towel. A search was also conducted on Vinnie Garbutt’s white Mistsubishi Galant where a set of keys for the Kia Sorento SUV was found. 

At first Police were distracted by what had been reported as a kidnapping of Independence Village resident Kayla Burgess but after a few hours it was found to be rouse after her body was found.

By Saturday of this past weekend Vinnie Garbutt was charged for the murder of Burgess under the directives of the Director of Public Prosecution. He appeared before Magistrate Nardia Morgan on Monday of this week where he faced a single charge for the murder.

A candlelight vigil was held at 6:30 p.m in front of the Hokey Pokey Dock on Tuesday ending at the Triangular Park in Independence. Funeral services are also being planned for March 26th at 2:00 p.m. at the Nazarene Church in Independence Village.
