The Queen’s Baton Relay, which is the singular event leading up to the opening of the XX Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 23-August 4, 2014, in Glasgow, Scotland, arrived in Belize on Monday April 21, 2014.

The Queen’s Baton Relay arrived into the country on the day Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated he 88th birthday. The Queen’s Baton Relay was received at the Philip Goldson International Airport by Mr. Hilly Martinez President of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, Mr. Sonny Meighan Vice President and Public Relations Officer of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, His Excellency Mr. Peter Hughes British High Commissioner to Belize,  Patrick Henry Chef-De-Mission to the XX Commonwealth Games, other members of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, the Hon. Dolores Garcia Area Representative for Belize Rural Central and Mr. Peter Magadlano Chairman of Ladyville Village Council and the media.

The Queen’s Baton was then relayed into Belize City by cyclists of the Cycle Federation of Belize to the Memorial Park where a tree planting ceremony took place in honour of the Queen’s Baton Relay to Belize.

The Baton was then relayed through the principal streets of Belize City, with His Worship the Lord Mayor of Belize City Mr. Darrel Bradley running the first leg, and the Hon. Minister of Sports Herman Longsworth running his leg from Wesley Church to Coburn Lane before handing over to Rowan Garel. A great symbolism was displayed when Minister of Youth and Sports Herman Longsworth handed the baton for its final leg to a young person.

The Official Ceremony and reception took place at the House of Culture where speeches were delivered by Minister Longsowrth, Mayor Bradley, President Martinez, and the Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Kalam Juman Yassin.

The Queen’s Baton Relay party then travelled to Punta Gorda Town, Dangriga Town, the Youth Cadet Corp and the City of Belize.
The Queen’s Baton Relay party leaves Belize today April 24, 2014 enroute to Bermuda then Canada and then to Europe. Belize was the 58 stop for the Queen’s Baton Relay.
