Punta Gorda Police continue to investigate the shooting death of 28 year-old Janice Vargas, who was killed in the Indianville Area of the Town. Her death is especially cruel since it happened on Mother’s Day, in front of her child, and at her home where she worked and lived and believed to be safe.

Vargas, who works as a waitress for Jamaica Bar, was turning in for the night; she was heading toward the bedroom she stayed at the back of the business place. That’s when she reportedly heard knocking on the doors of the bar, which was already closed. She didn’t open up for anyone, nevertheless, her assailant somehow managed to shoot her in the right shoulder through a window.

Police were called to try to save Vargas’ life, and when they arrived, they found a co-worker of hers, and her 2 year-old daughter. She was rushed to the Punta Gorda Hospital, and later transferred to the Southern Regional Hospital. On the way, however, Vargas succumbed to her injury. Her family members had to retrieve her 2 year-old daughter from police, she was showing emotional signs of having witnessed her mom bleeding out on the ground.

Investigators don’t have a motive at this time, and they’re looking for suspects pending an investigation.
