Alfred Kelvin, a 49 year-old San Pedro resident who is originally from Corozal, was killed on the island on Saturday, May 31, in the early morning hours.

Just before 2 a.m., San Pedro police officers were on patrol in the San Juan area, and they spotted Kelvin standing in front of Richie’s Supermarket on Pescador Drive. The business place had long since closed for the night, and so he was loitering. The officers kindly requested that he move from the location and go home, and he complied.

Less than 10 minutes later, the officers heard a single gunshot and raced back to the intersection of San Piper and Seaweed Streets. There, they found Kelvin’s lifeless body; a gunman shot him in the right eye, killing him almost instantly.  What the officers were able to find out is that he was walking home to his house in the area when his assailant ambushed him and fired a single shot before running off. Kelvin never saw the attack coming, and he fell where he was walking.

Kelvin’s family, on the other hand, hadn’t heard from him in almost 10 years; the last they knew of him was that he had migrated to the US, and that he returned home about 3 or 4 years ago. They told the media that since that time, he hasn’t gotten in contact with them, so to be called so suddenly and informed that they had to identify his body was a shock to them.

No one knows at this time why he was killed, and police are hoping that the public can assist them. The San Juan area has become sort of a crime hotspot on the Island, and so San Pedro Police are focusing quite a bit of their attention there.
