A laborer from Esperanza Village in the Cayo District has died as a result of a traffic accident.

Thirty five year old William Lopez was riding a bicycle in Esperanza Village on the left hand side of the road and was heading in the direction of Central Farm last Friday night at about 9:00 pm. In doing so, William Lopez was hit by a red in color Chevy Silverado truck with license plate BVO-000595 driven at the time by Belizean businessman from Arenal Road in Benque Viejo Town, Imer Hernandez. According to investigators, a vehicle that was heading in the opposite direction of Imer Hernandez was driving with a high beam, which caused Imer Hernandez to hit bicyclist William Lopez.

Businessman Imer Hernandez attempted to render aid to the injured William Lopez by transporting him to the nearby La Loma Luz Hospital. William Lopez was declared dead on arrival at the La Loma Luz Hospital by the attending doctor at 9:10 pm. The body of William Lopez was then transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where the attending doctor re-confirmed that death had occurred at 11:10 pm.

Forty six year old Imer Hernandez was detained, a notice of intended prosecution was issued to him and he was released. His vehicle, which exhibited damages to the front fenders, bonnet and grill, was impounded by Police.
