The family of 54 year-old Winston Whylie is trying to figure out what reason his shooter had for gunning down the older man, and killing him on Monday night, July 29.

Police haven’t released official details, but the information reaching the Guardian is that Whylie was walking on Victoria Street at around 11 p.m. He was minding his own business, when a man on bicycle rode past and shot him in the abdomen. That man then sped off on bike, and though police responded some 5 minutes later, they didn’t manage to get much information about who the shooter could have been.

Whylie was rushed to the KHMH, but about 2 hours later, he died while undergoing treatment; his internal injuries were too severe. At this time, speculation is high about the motive behind this shooting, and the most likely theory on the streets is that the gunman chose a random target simply because he wanted to hurt someone.

That’s the most plausible, but Whylie was charged and acquitted of murder in the 1990’s. He was accused of killing Jerry Middleton, but with the help of his defense attorney, the jury found him not guilty because they were satisfied that he acted in self-defence.

Whylie is well-known as a bicycle repairman, and so, not much is known as to why he was killed. His family does note that he had recently been receiving threats against his safety.
