Details of a home invasion that occurred on Mopan Street on June 26 was disturbing even for residents of Belize City, who have become accustomed to news of violent crimes.

According to reports, two armed men barged into the home of Alida Ascencio, 42, and Carlos Mayorga, 52, at around 4:30 a.m. as they were preparing ingredients for tacos to sell that morning. Ascencio and Mayorga were being assisted by Sejhan Avila, 21, and Jarina Avila, 19. According to reports, the men demanded money and Mayorga complied. He allegedly handed over $2,000 in cash. Unexplicably, the gunman responded with brutal cruelty. He ordered the victims to kneel down and opened fire on them. Mayorga suffered an injury in the neck and shoulder, and he died where he knelt. Karina Avila was injured in the left arm, and Sejhan Avila, and Alida Ascencio suffered injuries to the left chest and abdomen. Both robbers then fled the scene. The three women were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where, after clinging to life in the Intensive Care Unit for two days and a half, Ascencio succumbed to internal injuries caused by the bullet. Her sister says that the doctors found major damage to one of her kidneys, her pancreas, liver, and intestines.

After ten days of intensive investigation, police charged Khaleel Ponce, 21, with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Ponce appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith where in addition to the murder and attempted murder charges, he was charged additionally with two counts of dangerous harm and two counts of use of deadly means of harm upon the two Avila’s. In court, no plea was taken and due to the nature of the offenses Ponce was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance on October 1.
