The Belize City Council received a donation of three compactor garbage trucks courtesy of the Taiwanese government. The donation was presented to Mayor Darrell Bradley by new Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, H.E. Benjamin Ho on Wednesday, August 6.

The donation comes after almost a year since the Mayor of Belize City and Councilor Eric Chang visited Taiwan and the Taiwanese government asked them in what areas they could be of assistance. Sanitation was one area identified and Taiwan offered to donate three trucks. It has been a year since and it is just now that the trucks were able to be shipped to Belize since the cost of shipping was some 30 thousand Belize dollars per truck and the finances could not be identified by the council. It was then that fundraising was done in Taiwan and the funds were able to be secured and finally the shipment was possible.

According to Ambassador Ho, the donation has allowed Taiwan to assist Belize at the Central Government Level, Local Government Level and even the grassroots level. The donation of a compactor truck is not the first to Belize as earlier on they have donated a similar truck and fire engine to the Corozal Free Zone. Ambassador Ho explained that this type of assistance is in keeping with good "across the board relations" in Belize.

In addressing the gathering during the ceremonies, Mayor Darrell Bradley cited that this is not the only donation by Taiwan to Belize City, he noted that in the past it has donated traffic lights, induction lights and more recently is assisting with the urban redevelopment of the downtown area, in particular the House of Culture and the Commercial Center.

According to Mayor Bradley, the trucks will be put to use as early as next week to augment the garbage collection capabilities of the council.
