The scholarship program of the Belize Telemedia Limited is considered by many to be the best corporate charity initiatiative in the country and on Thursday, August 14, fifteen (15) more young Belizean will be given an opportunity to further their education.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Jose Suarez, Elijio Ku, Dion Ciego, Abdi Bochub, Renie Petillo, Kenrick Graham, Lifza Burgos, Janir Arnold, Naya Bodden, Kahlil Espat, Teesha Singh, Wallace Sebastian, Keisha Palma, Aiyana Rudon and Ashton Perriott. These individuals distinguished themselves from hundreds of applicants. The BTL Scholarship Committee reviewed all applications and selected a pool based on financial need, academic performance over the past three years and performance in the Primary School Examinations. Those candidates were called in for an interview with the committee during which they were asked questions that did not appear on the application form. Based on those interviews, the committee awarded scholarships to fifteen students.

The secondary school scholarship covers tuition, books and other school fees for the students’ four years at high school and the tertiary level scholarship covers the same for the student’s two years at junior college. A member of the scholarship committee is assigned to each scholarship recipient to play the role of mentor. They are to keep track of the student’s performance throughout the school year. Students also have the opportunity to request the services of a tutor that will be paid for by BTL. BTL boasts a graduation success rate of “more than 99 percent”, according to Michael Augustus, Head of the Scholarship Committee. The Belize Telemedia Limited has been providing opportunities for young Belizeans since its scholarship program started in 1991. It now maintains a scholarship class of at least 75 students annually. This year’s intake of fifteen brings the grand total of scholarship recipients to 579. The company is proud that it has invested over $1 million on the educational expenses of promising Belizean youths.

A ceremony will be held for the new scholarship recipients at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza.
