The Belize City Senior Female Competition playoff round continued last Wednesday August 13, at Rogers Stadium between the defending champions BTL and new entrant the Beacon in the best of three series. The series was even up at a game each and so it was a must win situation for both teams. The winner of the series would move on to the championship round and the right to face the Belize Bank Blazers the number one seed in this year’s competition.

And so it was to be that the BTL dynasty would come to an end in a most unexplainable situation.

BTL batting in the top of the 1st inning scored 4 runs off Beacon’s starter Kimani Smith who pitched 0.33 of the inning before departing from the game in favour of Vanessa Garbutt who came on in relief. Garbutt in relief gave up just 1 more run in the top of the 1st to BTL for a 5-0 lead. However, Beacon scored a single run in the bottom of the 1st inning to cut the deficit by 4 runs.

Meanwhile, in the top of the 2nd inning BTL failed to score any runs, while the Beacon in the bottom of the inning pushed 5 runs across the plate to take a 6-5 lead.

In the top of the 3rd inning, BTL scored 2 more runs to take a 7-6 lead once more. Martha Rhys who was the BTL pitcher of record was able to hold Beacon scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd inning, before it exploded for 4 more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning for a 10-7 lead. By this time, Rhys was replaced by the veteran catcher Ruth Lamb who was able to restore some order in the game.

BTL batting in the top of the 5th inning scored a single run and then added 4 more runs in the top of the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Beacon would tag Ruth Lamb for a single run for an 11-8 lead. The Beacon again batting in the bottom of the 6th inning scored another single run off Ruth Lamb for a 12-8 lead.

It was not until the bottom of the 7th inning with the bases loaded and nobody out that Martha Rhys who returned to the pitching chores walked in the winning run for the Beacon.

With the winning run crossing the plate, the BTL dynasty came to an end and a new beginning for softball in the Belize City competition.
