The Zone 4 Captain Mr. Samuel Bruce has hosted an annual summer camp for the Benque Viejo del Carmen's area children, which concluded on Friday August 22nd, at the spacious Sam’s Community Park; complimenting the efforts of community policing unit commanded by Corporal Joshua McKoy. This event has been hosted by Mr. Bruce since 2008, when the program began in Benque Viejo.  Zone 4 has been a model of success for the Police Department ever since.

This event required the coordinated effort of Zone Captain Sam Bruce and volunteer instructors such as Mrs. Carmita Harris, Rony Nix, Dorian Harris, Isela Tesucum. It also needed the help of Assistant instructors Gene Bruce and Luis Lisbey.

The summer camp was offered free of cost to over 60 children per day, along with police youth cadets, who took part in arts and craft projects, football, volleyball, and became immersed in the play ground's equipment.  Some of the many treats for the children were juice, biscuits, snacks, ideals’, Rice & Beans and chicken dinners. A total of 300 children  participated for the week in this year’s program.

During the course of the program various lectures were given by Corporal Joshua McKoy on gang infiltration in the community and schools. While social workers Emma Gabriel and Dr. Lilian Clerk discussed conflict resolution. Other issues like self esteem and peer pressures were discussed with the children.

Certificates for the completion of summer program were handed out to each child by the Officer in Charge of Benque Viejo Sub-Formation Superintendent David Arzu. He also gave a very emotional and inspirational speech to the children and organizers of the program at Zone Four.

The Captain’s message for this year’s Summer Camp was: we have reached a new age in Belize of technology, social media, and instant news with video and pictures; from anyone with cameras or cell phones. The experts of this technology are our youth, which have grown up with it, this new age has already impacted the normal way of doing things in Belize, the power for positive change is in the hands of our youth, use the power wisely, for a better Belize!
