The Belize Government has created an office of International Legal Cooperation in order to comply with the country's international obligations, aimed at promoting international co-operation and avoid duplication of work and efforts by attaching responsibility to one office.

Solicitor General Oscar Ramjeet said that Cabinet on Tuesday agreed to its establishment in the light of the intricate relationship that exists between Security and Justice in a real world plagued with crime and insecurity.

Mr. Ramjeet added that the responsibilities of the Attorney General Ministry have been substantially increased overtime, especially since key Ministries which participate in and are affected by international corporation, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Security, rely heavily in the legal expertise of the legal staff of the Solicitor General's office, especially Mrs. Iran Tillett Dominiguez, considered an expert in the field.

The new office will address international requests for legal assistance, in light of Belize's obligations pursuant to multilateral Conventions and bilateral treaties to which the Attorney General's Ministry is the Central Authority; moreover, the nature of the duties of the office requires coordination in both technical and legal matters with key Ministries such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Security.

The International Legal Co-operation office will also process requests for service of documents, requests for legal assistance pursuant to bilateral treaties and international conventions to which Belize is a party, participating in and advising Government on negotiations of bilateral treaties and international conventions on matters related with legal assistance and international cooperation, assisting and advising other Ministries and Departments on issues in public international laws and several other areas.
