Prime Minisiter, Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, during his presentation on Friday, April 12, announced that the Government will be repealing the Maritime Areas Act.  That piece of legislation has been at the center of negotiations with Guatemala as it basically granted them access to the Caribbean Sea.

From its inception the Maritime Areas Bill has caused great consternation within the UDP so much so that it caused a splinter in the party. And while that may now be a part of history, the PM announced on Friday that after the referendum takes place, the Maritime Areas Bill will be repealed.

PM Barrow noted that within a couple of weeks after the Referendum is held, the Bill will be repealed. That would then mean that Belize will be claiming all of its territorial waters which would include the Southern part of the country, locking off Guatemala from access to the Caribbean sea.
