The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority, better known as KHMHA, celebrated its 23rd anniversary on Saturday, September 15, 2018. In lieu of their 23rd birthday, there was a short ceremony held in the hospital lobby on Monday, September 17, 2018. There, CEO Michelle Cox-Hoare, members of the KHMHA Board, representatives of the Embassy of Cuba, returning Cuban interns, and other persons of the public met to commemorate the event.

CEO Cox-Hoare gave remarks to those in attendance, recounting the history of the hospital, formerly The New Belize City Hospital which opened its doors on September 15, 1995. It was renamed the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and in 2003, was renamed the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority. Since then, it continues to grow. “September 15th 1995, the then New Belize City Hospital had a total of 189 and a staff complement of 351. She also read out their mission statement, CLEARS. “The strategic objective for the next five years aims at results based management and focused on a sustained drive to increase efficiencies and sustain costs. So, what is our new vision? We believe that we will be the national leader in the provision of the highest quality and affordable services. What will drive this vision? We believe the set of core values we defined for the very first time that having Confidentiality in patient care, Loyalty to the institution, Ethical patient care delivery, Accountability in all we do, Respectful working interactions, and Strengthening team work.”
