San Ignacio Police have charged Gabriel Cunil for the murder of 79 year old Florencio Guillermo Bardalez, whose body was found at his farm in Esperanza Village on Monday of last week. A post mortem has so far indicated that Bardalez died from asphyxiation by bronchial aspiration and head trauma from a blunt instrument. Police were able to find a piece of stick and a stone near his body.

To remember Bardalez, who was a local Baptist Church Pastor, a candle light vigil was held by San Ignacio residents at the Columbus Park on Friday night. Justice of the Peace Landy Espat told participants,

“We are in solidarity with the Bardalez family, who suffered the loss of their father, grandfather…he was a dedicated pastor of his Church and did not deserve to go this way”

A statement from the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council is as follows: We are very saddened by the news of the senseless murder of Pastor Bardalez. The office of the Mayor expresses its sincere condolences to the family and all those affected by this brutal act. Upon reading this, please take a moment of silence and pray for the family, friends and our community.

Pastor Bardalez was a former instructor at the Listowell Training School in the Cayo District for many years. He will also be remembered as a hard working farmer in Esperanza Village, faithfully bringing his produce to San Ignacio every week.
