Police are investigating a Labour day accident which claimed the life of a 7-month-old baby. The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on May 1, 2017 when Darrel Jackson, a 23-year-old Belize City resident, was driving a grey Mitsubishi Endeavor on the George Price Highway. Along with him were 7 passengers, Vidal Davis, 22-years-old, Standford Casimiro, 10-years-old, AJ Flores, 19-years-old, Jermaine Wagner, Aldis Ferguson, Johlanie Ferguson, and Esmay Ferguson, the 7-month-old baby.

According to police reports, Jackson lost control of the SUV around mile 9. That caused the vehicle to flip over causing varying degrees of injuries to all the passengers and claiming the life of Esmay.

Acording to ASP Juanito Cocom, Deputy Officer Commanding the Rural Eastern Division, police responded to a road traffic accident at Mile 9 on the George Price Highway where they observed a Mitsubishi in a ditch off the road. Investigations revealed to police that the vehicle was being driven by Jackson who only possessed a learner’s permit. He was heading from Belize City toward Belmopan when approaching Mile 9 he lost control of the vehicle.

According to police, two of the victims are in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Jackson, who was served with a notice of intended prosecution, was arraigned before Magistrate Stephanie Gillett on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. He was read four traffic offenses to which no plea was taken. The offenses were one count of manslaughter by negligence, one count of causing death by careless conduct, one count of driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, and one count of driving a motor vehicle in contravention with his learners permit. Bail was set at $5000 plus one surety of the same amount. Jackson was ordered to surrender his learner’s permit, driving rights, refrain from obtaining any driving permit or license, and he must stay away from any prosecution witness.
