Tyree Gentle, a 19-year-old AC Technician and a resident of Raccoon Street, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after he was arraigned on two gun related offenses as well as a traffic offense. In court, where he appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Khadeen Palmer, he pleaded not guilty to the firearm related offenses but guilty to the traffic violation.

According to the police report, on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 8:50 p.m. while on Fairweather Street, a vehicle sped off upon seeing the police. The officers set chase behind the vehicle until it came to a stop on George Street. There, the driver was seen removing an object from his pants and throwing it away.

A search of the area led to the discovery of an unlicensed 9 mm pistol. For that offense, he was charged with kept firearm without being granted a gun license. The firearm was loaded with ten live rounds of ammunition and for that offense, he was also charged with kept ammunition without being granted a license by the COMPOL. Gentle was also charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle without being the holder of a Belize driver’s license.

For the two gun related charges, the magistrate explained that while bail could not be granted, he has the right to apply for Supreme Court bail. For the time being, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his adjournment which is set for May 14, 2018. For the traffic related offense, he was imposed a non-custodial sentence where he was fined $100 plus the $5.00 cost of court to be paid by March 1, 2018 in default of one month imprisonment.

Important to note is that the police are of the belief that Gentle is the man who shot Tyrone Guy on Monday, February 12, 2018 on Fairweather Street but they are unable to charge him in connection with that shooting as the victim is not requesting any court action.
