On Tuesday, February 20th, 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Immigration held the launch of a project. This project, entitled “Reducing the Carbon Footprint of San Ignacio Town and five surrounding villages in the Cayo District”, is funded by the Government of Italy through the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea.

The project has two main components: the installation of LED street lights and the construction of a modern Resiliency Centre. These components will contribute toward the reduction of local energy use as well as reducing the vulnerability to extreme weather events that are related to climate change. With regards to component one of the project, fixtures have been procured and a first phase encompassing 15 streets in San Ignacio have been completed to date.

Component two includes the construction of a Multipurpose Community Center at the Victor Galvez Stadium. . The “Cayo North Resource and Resilience Centre (CNRRC)” will be designed to be powered by a Photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy system as well as storage tanks for potable water, promoting self-sustenance.

Besides being of service to the residents of San Ignacio in times of national emergency and extreme weather conditions, the center is also being designed to facilitate and support local social and youth development needs. The center will host a gymnasium with a FIBA quality basketball court, seating for 600, a stage, dressing rooms, bathrooms, and office space.

The people of Cayo North are also being gifted with a multipurpose facility at the Theodocio Ochoa Park through the support of the Government of India. Both projects have been secured through the efforts of Hon. Omar Figueroa, the area representative for Cayo North.
