Harold CaballerosThe ‘Diario de Centro America’, a Guatemalan newspaper has reported that a Guatemalan minister will be visiting Belize shortly to try to arrive at a date for the holding of a referendum on the Guatemalan claim to Belize.

The newspaper is reporting that President Otto Perez Molina made the announcement on Sunday 22nd April that Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Harold Caballeros will be visiting Belize to speak with Belizean authorities over a date to be set for a referendum to decide whether or not we should go to the International Court of Justice to settle the Guatemalan claim over Belize.  The newspaper reports that during that country’s cabinet meeting, the president announced that the meeting will be specifically to reach an agreement by both countries to set a date and to have public consultation on the issue next year.

The date for the visit by Caballeros to Belize was not set but the president said it is likely that the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, is likely to accompany him to Belize.
