Participants of the Belize City Council Summer Sports CampThrough the collaboration of the Belize City Council and other sponsors, Councilor with responsibility for After-school Programs and Health, Dr. Alain Gonzalez, has organized a summer camp for youths in Belize City. The camp has been running from July 16th and will go up until August 10th. According to Gonzalez, the camp is designed to offer youngsters instruction in computer technology, arts and health education. The children are also afforded the opportunity to interact with guest speakers from law enforcement organizations such as the Police and the Belize Defence Force.

Currently, there are between 65 and 70 children enrolled in the camp and Gonzales says that apart from receiving instruction, they are also afforded the opportunity to go on field trips. They will be visiting the Belize Zoo and the prison on Thursday. Later in the camp, they will be afforded an opportunity to go out to sea at one of the cayes.  According to Councilor Gonzalez, the camp is all-encompassing and is targeted at youths who are at-risk. In fact, the visit to the prison was specifically put in to show the young people one of the final outcomes of leading a bad lifestyle.
