Belmopan Bandits maintain lead in Premier League Opening Season Competition Print

The Premier League of Belize 2018 Opening Season continued over the last weekend with four games on the schedule.

On Saturday September 1, 2018, at the Victor Sanchez Union Field in Punta Gorda Town, the defending champions and current leaders in this year’s Opening Season competition continued on its winning path when it defeated the Freedom Fighters by the score of 5-1.

The host team Freedom Fighters was the first to make it onto the scoreboard when Alexander Peters scored the 1st goal of the game to give his team an early 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short-lived, as the Belmopan Bandits came roaring back with a goal of its own when Georgie Welcome scored the 1st of his three goals of the game in the 31st minute of play to tie the score at 1-1. The Belmopan Bandits then took the lead when Georgie Welcome scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 43rd minute of play for a 2-1 lead.

The first half of the game ended 2-1 in favour of the Belmopan Bandits.

In the second half of the game, the Freedom Fighters was able to tie the score at 2-2 when Leary Simon scored the equalising goal in the 48th minute of play.

Georgie Welcome then made the score of the game a 3-2 affair when he scored his 3rd and final goal of the game in the 58th minute of play. Norman Anderson then scored the 4th goal of the game for the Belmopan Bandits in the 65th minute of play for a 4-2 lead. The final goal of the game was scored by Trimayne Harris in the 83rd minute of play for the 5-2 victory.

Meanwhile, at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town, Verdes FC kept a breast with the Belmopan Bandits when it edged out the San Pedro Pirates by the score of 2-1. The visiting Verdes team was the first onto the scoreboard when Jaret Davis scored the 1st goal of the game into the 24th minute of play for a 1-0 lead.

In the second half of the game, the San Pedro Pirates, was able to make it onto the scoreboard when Eduardo Chavirra scored the equalising goal in the 57th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1. Nahjib Guerra then scored the go-ahead goal for Verdes in the 61st minute of play to give his team a 2-1 lead and the victory.

The competition then continued on Sunday 2nd September, 2018, with two more games. At the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga Town, the host team Wagiya FC edged out the visiting Polcie United FC by the score of 2-1.

The visiting Police United FC was the first to make it onto the scoreboard when Andres Makin scored the 1st goal of the game in the 18th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, Wagiya came back with a goal of its own when Jonard Castillo scored the first of his two goals in the 22nd minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.

In the second half of the game, Jonard Castillo scored his 2nd and final goal of the game in the 56th minute of play to give his team a 2-1 victory.

And in the final game of the game at the MCC Grounds, Altitude Assassins FC blanked the BDf fC by the score of 1-0.

The only goal of the game was scored by Kyle Flowers in the 78th minute of play for the victory.

There will be no games this weekend as Belize’s National Football Team will be in competition with the Bahamas.
