It has been many, many moons since I last tuned in to Love FM’s “Morning Show”. In truth, there is dwindling appetite nationally for talk shows pretending to be what they are not.  People prefer an honest and upfront declaration. RED or BLUE. This Wednesday morning September 5, I lingered for a split minute too long on our local channel 58 here in OW which carries Love TV on Centaur Cable Network.  The first thing I heard was Maheia attacking the government by railing about some road or the other in PG, claiming  that the UDP preferred to construct an airport bypass road rather than directing monies to his district.  Even if he has an arguable point, I am just so exhausted from listening to these demagogues using susceptible media outlets to advance their fly- by- night political ambitions by   transmuting every minor shortfall our country experiences into an epic failure of this UDP government.

This gentleman, along with the king of them all at PUPS TV, should put their names on a ballot and offer the people a manifesto as to what they can deliver if elected. It’s cheap to complain, admirable to make a difference.  Let us now review the quarrel behind the most costly non-entity which the PUP bought and paid for during their previous term, on our behalf. Even if we agree that the UHS debt had been completely retired by the outgoing PUP government in 2008, they did wrong to provide a national guarantee for a private hustle and pay it off with public finances, irrespective if the monies came as grants from other countries.  This practice is considered outright stealing in civilized democracies. Here in Belize the PUP has a license to concoct these deals. They call it the art of the deal.  Here is the PUP’s closing curtain on the debate when they put their tails between their legs and ran.

Hon. John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“This is a charade, this is a circus. How can you have a government brings a bill that they are going to vote against? We are not going to be a part of this. We know what they’ve been doing. It’s just to put a show and people are tired of this foolishness.”

‘your presence is also a show. Why come if you are going to walk out?”

Personally, I would like to know who this Reporter was, to shake his hand. This was a brilliant observation. Why use taxpayer’s fuel to go to Belmopan, just so as to walk out! What kind of foolishness is that? To top it off, the walkout was planned long beforehand to make the UDP look foolish, but it is us Belizeans who end up looking and feeling stupid. When ordinary workers walk off their jobs their pay is docked for that period. Do we now dock the PUPs payroll? Politics like this frustrates the common man on the street, I tell you!
